The Australian Government has confirmed a new start date for the Support at Home program. Originally scheduled to begin on 1 July 2025, the program will now commence on 1 November 2025.

This decision comes after strong feedback from aged care providers and advocacy organisations, who raised concerns about having enough time to get ready. The four-month delay is intended to ensure a smooth and safe transition for older Australians receiving care at home.

What is the Support at Home Program?

Support at Home Program is set to replace the current Home Care Packages program. The goal is to create a more flexible, transparent, and easy-to-navigate system for in-home aged care services across Australia.

It will bring together a range of supports under one system, making it easier for older Australians and their families to access the help they need to continue living safely and independently at home.

Why Has the Start Date Changed?

The delay allows aged care providers more time to:

  • Finalise systems and processes

  • Train staff on the new requirements

  • Make sure clients and families are well-informed about what’s changing

The government has said this pause is about getting it right. The new Aged Care Act that underpins the program includes a Statement of Rights and a Statement of Principles that focus on respect, safety, and putting older people first.

What This Means for You

If you or a loved one currently receives support at home, nothing will change for now. You will continue to receive the same care, and no action is required.

This delay simply gives everyone involved a little more time to prepare for the changes ahead.

Our View

At My Companionship, we welcome this decision. These reforms are a big step forward, and it’s important they are rolled out with care and attention. A little more time now means better outcomes later – for older Australians, families, and the providers supporting them.
